NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH CAMPUS SERIES CENTERED ON
"WE ARE YOU PROJECT INTERNATIONAL"
New Jersey City University will host a series of campus programs centered around "We Are You Project International," an initiative that is the first comprehensive, coast-to-coast artistic overview of the current state of Latino socio-cultural, political, and economic conditions in the 21st century, as part of its campus celebration of "National Hispanic Heritage Month."
All programs will be held in October at the University, 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. Admission to all programs is free and open to the community. Tuesday, October 9-Tuesday, October 30, 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and by appointment, Michael Gilligan Student Union Art Gallery
The "We Are You Project International" art exhibit features paintings, prints, and multi-media works by more than 30 contemporary Hispanic artists, including nine NJCU alumni and faculty. NJCU alumni whose works are featured include Josephine Barreiro M.F.A. '99, William Coronado '06, Rosario D'Rivera '01, Hugo Morales '85, M.A. '93, Sergio Villamizar '07, and Raúl Villarreal M.F.A. '05. and Olga Cruz MFA '06. NJCU faculty whose work is featured include Dr. José Rodeiro, professor of art; Gerardo Castro, adjunct professor of art, and Hugo X. Bastidas, associate professor of art. Exhibiting artists also include José Acosta, Efrén Álvarez, Nelson Álvarez, Willie Báez, Mónica S. Camin, Priscila De Carvalho, Jacqui Casale, Pablo Caviedes, Carlos Chávez, Maritza Dávila, Ricardo Fonseca, Fernando Goldoni, Elizabeth Jiménez Montelongo, Roberto Márquez, Raphael Montañez Ortíz, Lisette Morel, Patricio Moreno-Toro, Gabriel Navar, Julio Nazario, Jimmy Peña, Joe Peña, Duda Penteado, Mel Ramos, Rolando Reyna, Jesús Rivera, Francisco Rosas, and Marta Sánchez.

"We Are You Project," a documentary directed by artist and filmmaker Duda Penteado and produced by Jinsing Productions, will be screened. The film features interviews with prominent leaders and artists, including Dr. Carlos Hernández, NJCU immediate past president; Mario Tapia, president and CEO of the Latino Center on Aging in New York City; Raphael Montañez Ortíz, an artist and professor who is founder of the Museo del Barrio; Mr. Bastidas, Dr. Rodeiro, Ms. D' Rivera, Mr. Villamizar, Mr. Villarreal, and Ms. Barreiro. A panel discussion with Mr. Penteado and several of the artists featured in the documentary will follow.

An artists' reception for the "We Are You Project International" exhibit will feature remarks by Dr. Hernández and Mr. Tapia, two of the founders and leaders of the We Are You Project who will speak about the Project's future and its groundbreaking socio-cultural significance for all Latinos, as well as a performance by Hiram Colón, composer of the music and lyrics for the We Are You Project theme song, and singer Sophia Angelica of the "Dora the Explorer" television show.

A closing reception will feature readings by several internationally acclaimed poets, including Alan Britt, Pablo Caviedes, Alex Lima, Raphael Montañez Ortíz, Mike Foldes, Carmen D. Lucca, Gabriel Navar, and Mr. Penteado. The program will be moderated by Mr. Britt.
